Tasting Report December 2023 We did not receive the normal report for this event so it is published as supplied by Tim Fawle. Our December tasting is traditionally hosted by the President who has chosen the wines. We had 57 members due to attend this tasting but unfortunately several members were unable to participate due to illness issues. However, 49 members attended in a convivial and relaxed atmosphere at A Bordo Club Nautica, Javea There was no formal wine scoring and the wines selected were some that we had tasted before and some of the President’s favourites. CBWS Tasting held on 16/11/23 at Los Amigos, Javea and attended by 58 members and guests President Tim welcomed members and guests to the tasing at a favourite restaurant. He introduced Kathy and Andrew Johnson, tasting team members and hosts for this event. Tasting October 2023
CBWS Tasting held on October 19th 2023 at Bodegas Nodus, Caudete de las Fuentes in the Utiel Requena DO, attended by the maximum of 28 members. This was a monthly Tasting Dinner with a difference! We headed west of Valencia Bodegas Nodus – a name familiar to most of us on many local restaurant wine lists. Our event was a ’Dinner, Bed and Breakfast’ House Party. Adjacent to the winery is a heritage building, Finca El Renegada, so named because the original owner and winemaker was ‘an outsider’. CBWS Tasting held on 21/09/2023 at Jesus Pobre Riurau and attended by 61 members and guests Theme: Can you taste the flavour of the grapes in the wine? A tasting of local wines and a meal of local, traditional products. Presented by Santi Signes,Tony Cabban, Rodolfo Valiente, Andreu Costa Renaix la Passió, Moscatel D.O. Alicante, 2022 13% Bodegas Riko. €9 This wine is from Jalon, it is made a naturally as possible with native yeasts and does not spend any time in a barrel and it is not fermented on the lees.In the mouth, a fine and elegant wine, with a medium volume and long persistence with a pleasant bitter finish characteristic of Moscatel. CBWS Tasting held on 15/06/2023 at Restaurante Puerto Blanco and attended by 52 members and guests President Tim welcomed 52 members and guests and introduced Kathy and Andrew Johnson, members of the Tasting Team who organised the evening. Andrew then thanked Chef Patron Patrick for the additional reception drink and explained that Patrick with Head Sommelier Alexander had produced a fabulous pairing menu for the night, with 5 wines, each partnering a gourmet dish. CBWS Tasting held on 18/05/2023 at Les Rotas, Denia and attended by 50 members and guests presented by Paul and Helen Nicholls This tasting from Marqués de Riscal bodega of excellent standing, the most prodigious in Spain, their wine is ubiquitous and well respected in Spain and the world. In 2022 voted the 2nd best winery in the world. José Antonio Garcia area manager, with Rafael Ruiz Isla a wine educator. CBWS Tasting held on 20/04/2023 The Food and Lounge Bar in Denia Marina and attended by 51 members and guests This wine tasting was designed to pair 5 small food dishes to 5 specific wines. As a result of the positive feedback we received last year when hosting a similar format, at this same venue, we decided to repeat this style once again, but with different wines and food pairings. CBWS Tasting held on 16/03/2023 at Los Amigos, Javea,and attended by 52 members and guests A South American wine tasting hosted by Gillian Ashworth and Hugh Epsom, and assisted by Tim Fawle. The wines included a great Chilean Carménére, an Argentinian Torrontés, and a couple of Malbecs, all from well-established Chilean and Argentinian bodegas from the Valle del Maule in Chile, and the Valle de Uco, Mendoza and Tupungato in Argentina. Tasting February 2023
On Thursday evening at Javea Golf Club, we had an excellent tasting evening, attended by 51 members and guests, a really impressive turnout for this time of year. It was hosted by Sara and Neville Richardson. The wines were presented by Gonzalo Lainez, export manager for Principe de Viana Group, who own and distribute many excellent Spanish wines. He was supported by Jose Blasco, owner of Bodegas Blasco in Teulada. A fuller report on the evening will follow in the monthly newsletter. We tasted five wines. A total of 44 members and guests attended the tasting in the hotel’s La Senia Restaurant The wines we tasted were those that had received the most points by CBWS members during 2022. We plan to start each year with a tasting of the highest scoring wines from the previous year and it was interesting to compare how these were scored by members on a second tasting. The tasting of our 2 whites was together as they are the same grape, godello, and achieved the top ratings.
